Acts 3:12 Peter said, "You Israelites...why do you stare at us, as though by our own power or piety we had made him walk?"
Peter and John have just healed a man who was lame since birth. The people see the man walking and leaping, and they look at Peter and John with amazement. Peter quickly tells them that they didn't heal the man. It was the power of God.
I often find myself driven to change things and to get things done. It is so easy for me to forget that it is not my own power or piety that makes things happen. I forget that I am not in control. I forget that it isn't all up to me. I forget that I don't have to be perfect or pious to do God's work in the world.
Peter and John had witnessed the power of God that raised Jesus from the dead. They knew they could call on that power to bring new life to others. But they knew they didn't have it in their own power to perform such miracles.
We don't need to be driven, powerful, or pious. Like Peter and John, we can bring new life and healing to others-but we don't do it ourselves.
