Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ,
Fr. Gary is on vacation. The following is the Forward Day by Day Reflection for today, Thursday, July 10th.
Matthew 24:14. And this good news of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the world.
It is difficult at first glance to tell just what the good news might be. In the preceding verses, Jesus says the center of religious life will be torn down; false prophets will hold sway; wars, famines, and earthquakes will scar human life; the faithful will be vilified; betrayal will be commonplace; and love will grow cold. All of these things, Jesus assures us, will take place before the end.
The good news, obviously, is not that the world experiences these things. While it is tempting to say our generation experiences them uniquely, the fact is any generation could identify with our Lord's predictions. These things are relatively constant in life, and there is little religion can do to make it otherwise.
The good news is that there is an end. Just as all of creation has a beginning rooted in the love of God, so too it will end in the fruition of that same love. All things-temples and tyrants, famines and festivals, false prophets and true-are on their way to the embrace of God. Nobody knows what that means, but we Christians trust it to be good news.
