Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ,
Today I share with you the meditation from Forward Day by Day:
Mark 3:5 Stretch out your hand.
This phrase appears thirty-two times in the NRSV translation of the Bible. I think anytime something is repeated more than three times, it's probably worth paying extra attention to. In today's story, just as in the other thirty-odd times this phrase is used in the Bible, God is asking us to take an active and physical role in the story of redemption.
When God asks Moses to stretch his hand over the Red Sea to divide it, the children of Israel walk across dry land, freed from the bondage of Egypt. When Jesus asks the man with the withered hand to stretch out his hand, Jesus divides the seas of hard-heartedness. Jesus shows us that hardness of heart is more crippling and limiting than a withered hand.
The healing Jesus brings refuses to obey anyone's timing, other than his own. Doing the right thing, the right way, for the right reason, with a lack of regard for the date on the calendar or the scorn of others, is one of the chief reasons we love Jesus, and one of the reasons for which he was killed. We should remember that.
See Ya Sunday!
