Fr. Gary is in Asheville for the day. Below, please find the Forward Day by Day meditation for today.
Luke 2:49 Jesus said, "Did you not know that I must be in my Father's house?"
Saint Joseph has no recorded words in scripture. We meet the earthly father of Jesus in the birth narratives, and there are some not-so-pleasant references to him by the crowds, but we don't hear him speak in scripture.
On many levels, I find Joseph to be the model disciple. Joseph listened to God and did what God asked of him. He managed to stay out of the way and never sought to draw attention to himself. Often, we feel we deserve praise and attention, and we get offended when overlooked. In a family with Jesus and Mary, Joseph might have had a thing or two to say about feeling overlooked.
Yet Joseph reminds us that as members of God's family, we are called to keep our focus on the Word and not on the "words" we often so easily speak. Silence. Silence. Silence.
We can learn from Joseph to stand silently before the mysteries of life. Joseph listened to God and acted on God's words, but no words are recorded as having come from him. When faced with puzzlement, anxiety, betrayal, and loss, we might consider adopting the posture of Joseph to be faithful and to be still.
