Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ,
Fr. Gary is out of town doing Continuing Education in Congregational Development and Vitality. In place of his weekly column is today's reflection from Forward Day by Day:
Mark 6:42. And all ate and were filled.
After a long day of healing, preaching, and teaching, Jesus and the disciples just want to slip away. Instead, the crowd follows, and Jesus continues to teach. He wants to give them more-food to eat before their journeys home for the night. With a few fish and some pieces of bread, he feeds the five thousand. The image is one of abundance.
In this miracle, we witness the abundance of God. God gives and gives to us, and then God gives even more. On a lonely seashore, God fills the hearts and bellies of the faithful even when the situation seems impossible or bleak. While the disciples see the obstacles, God sees the opportunity. While we see only scarcity, God knows there is abundance.
We are surrounded by an abundance of God's mercy and love. We are surrounded by an abundance of opportunities for service and kindness. We are surrounded by an abundance of miracles. God does not leave us with empty bellies and broken hearts. God fills us to our brim so we may overflow with that abundance.
See ya Sunday!
Blessings & Peace
