Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ,
Fr. Gary offers the Forward Day by Day reflection for today:
Acts 1:9. When he had said this, as they were watching, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight.
Ascension Day never made an impression on me until I came to South Africa. Because it always falls during the week, Ascension Day doesn't get much attention at many American churches. Here it is a major feast and, until recently, was a public holiday. During Eucharist at the college, we gave the day its due with abundant incense, special vestments, and a guest preacher.
As I focused on this passage in Acts, I began to wonder what happened after Jesus ascended and the men in white robes disappeared. We are told that everyone returned to Jerusalem. Was there a letdown after the events of Jesus' death and resurrection? Did his followers feel overwhelmed by the expectations of Jesus that they be his witnesses "to the ends of the earth"?
When I am overcome by events, I often look for routine busyness to fill my time and my thoughts. The disciples returned to the room where they had been staying to devote themselves to prayer. I think they had the right idea-the next time I am overwhelmed, I'll go to my room and devote myself to prayer.
Alleluia, Christ is risen. The Lord is risen indeed! Alleluia!
Blessings, Peace, Joy, & Hope,
