Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ,

Fr. Gary is on vacation and is sharing today's Forward Day by Day devotional.  He hopes to see everyone this Sunday.

Thanksgiving Day

Matthew 20:16  So the last will be first, and the first will be last.

He was an older man who lived in a first-floor apartment near the edge of Boston's red-light district.  The rent was low; he didn't have much money.  His was a one-room apartment with furnishing, rugs, and walls in various shades of brown.

He asked me about God, about Jesus.  Newly out of seminary, I had many answers - too many. Then he asked if I'd like to hear something.  Of course, I agreed.

He went over to a small tape recorder and turned the volume up loud.  What came from the little box was a masterpiece: a recording of the Lord's Prayer sung with such feeling that we could have been in front row opera seats.

One other item gave him great joy:  his baseball card collection, which he gave to the church before he died.  All his treasures - the recording and the collection - he shared.

He deserves a seat right at the heavenly banquet table, along with others who struggled greatly in this life.  Put me in the back of the room, standing up, squeezed in.  Just keep that door open.

Peace,

Gary+
