1 Corinthians 15:9-10 For I am the least of the apostles, unfit to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace towards me has not been in vain.
I watched Popeye cartoons on Saturday mornings as a little girl. I can see the animated sailor now, a red pipe bobbing in one side of his mouth while the other side curls up in determination as he croaks, "I yam what I yam." With this candid self-assessment and a big can of spinach, he steels himself to take on whatever comes his way.
I hear a bit of this bravado in Paul's letter to the church at Corinth. Not an arrogant bravado but a confidence colored by honest self-awareness, infused with the unwavering power of God's grace. A man who knows where he has been and hopes in where he is headed. Someone who knows his baggage and mines it for wisdom. A mortal reconciled to his past, open to the present, and thus, prepared for the future.
